Research and Planning: Music Genre Collage

This is a collage of the rock music genre, it is typically male dominated and has the colours red, black and white as a recurring theme. The fonts that are used in this genre are louder do not tend to have round edges, capital letters are also used very regularly. The magazine 'KERRANG!' uses a big bold font with cracks throughout it, this relates to the rock genre. When I produce my magazine, I will use these ideas to help me design the cover.

Research and Planning: Music magazine analysis

The target audience of this magazine is very clear as it is a rock music magazine therefore it is aimed at fans of rock music; and the age group varies to all ages.

The models on the magazine are represented as rockstars as they are in darker colours and some of them have tattoos.

This music magazine follows a three colours scheme of red, white and yellow. You can clearly tell that this is a rock music magazine as there are rockstars on the front with a title cover line of 'THE OFFICIAL ROCK 100'. Also, the fonts used are big and bold and seem quite loud to emphasise that it is to resemble rock music; this includes the masthead which is placed behind the main picture.

This relates to the layout which this magazine follows, which is more laid back and does not follow simple guidelines. There is a wide variety of fonts used which makes the magazine look more interesting and intrigues the people to buy the magazine. The cover lines used show rock musicians therefore fans of them will also buy the magazine to read what the story is about.

Research and Planning: My College Magazine Contents Page

This is a mock up for my college magazine contents page. It is not quite finished although it shows the general layout and colour scheme.

Research and Planning: My College Magazine Cover

This is my final College Magazine cover design. I have used a black, yellow and pink colour scheme to represent hyde college, this matched the feedback I got during the target audience videos. The cover lines on the cover are used to intrigue the reader as they are cover lines which are supposed to attract college students to buy the magazine. In my opinion, the font sizes are good although there is no variety in different font types therefore there is room for improvement if I ever made a magazine in the future. The photo taken for the magazine is relevant as it is taken outside of the college, also, the person in the photo resembles a student as she is holding revision textbooks. I think that four cover lines is enough for the magazine cover. It is clear that this magazine is new due to the text in the bottom left corner which says 'NEW!!'. The publication line says 'All the news you'll ever need' which tells the reader that it is the best magazine around and that everyone should get it. I have priced this magazine at £1.99 to show that it is cheap and affordable. In my original design, I had the model taking up much of the page however when I came to take the photos, the college in the background made it look more like a college magazine therefore I kept the background meaning I could not have the model taking up as much of the page as I wanted.

Research and Planning: College Magazine Photos

These photos were all taken for the college magazine. In these photos, the student is holding textbooks so that the reader can clearly tell they are a college student. Two of the photos were taken at the college entrance while the others were taken inside of college. After viewing these photos I decided to choose the top one.

Research and Planning: Masthead Challenge

These are my examples of mastheads which I have created to fit each genre. The 'DEATHMETAL' masthead is to fit with a magazine with a Death Metal genre, I chose this font because it is big and therefore looks loud; similar to Death Metal music. I also made the masthead black because Death Metal has a dark feel to it. The 'PopWorld' masthead is to fit with a magazine with a pop genre, I chose this masthead because it looks modern; Pop music is quite modern therefore I chose this font. Finally, the 'Popcorn' masthead is to support a film magazine which does reviews, I chose this masthead because it looks digital therefore it fits with the film genre.

Research and Planning: Medium Close Ups

In my magazine I will need to use a medium close up, these photos are examples of medium close ups.

Research and Planning: College Magazine Analysis

The target audience for this magazine are students who attend college, and young adults who are interested in college life.

Codes and Conventions:
  • Masthead
  • Cover Lines
  • Publication Line
  • Issue Number
  • High Quality Image
  • Barcode/Price

You can clearly tell that this magazine is based around college as the man in the picture is holding books which are used to study while at college; also, the masthead of the magazine reads 'COLLEGE' which gives us a clear impression that it is a college magazine.
The cover stories on the magazine are based on college students' interests, for example:
'MAKE MONEY ON CAMPUS'. This is clearly used to intrigue college students to read the magazine  so that they can find out how, this also shows that this magazine's target audience is college students. The publication line on this magazine is:
Which is the website for the magazine. The barcode which is placed at the bottom is used when purchasing the magazine and has the price written next to it.

Research and Planning: Adobe InDesign Tutorial

Research and Planning: Photoshop Challenge

Today I completed the Photoshop Challenge. I first opened up an A4 document in Photoshop by selecting File, New and changed the preset to international paper 'A4'. Next, I wrote the text 'AS Media Studies' in Century Gothic in size 24 font: to do this I used the horizontal type to tool from the left tool bar. I changed the colour of the text to red using the 'color picker' option and moved the text to the middle with the move tool. Once the text was in I changed the background colour to blue by selecting the background layer and then using the new fill layer option and selecting 'Solid color'. Also, I added a drop shadow to the text by selecting the layer and changing the blending options. I then added an image of Nicolas Cage at the bottom of page.

Research and Planning: Photoshop CD Tutorial

Today I have created a CD Cover on Photoshop. I have used the colour balancing tool to change the colour of multiple images including creating a brass-like colour for the horn. I have also used the magic wand tool and the marquee tool which are both used to cut part of an image from the original and add it to your own. I have used a slight distortion in the background so that the image does not look as simple.  Finally, I have added small things to the image such as the notes and the title 'Adam's Jazz Classics' to fill any empty space.

Research and Planning: Photoshop Skin Tutorial

Today I have learnt how to use the Spot healing brush tool to clear any spots and blemishes. I have also found out how to change facial features e.g. lips, eyes etc. using the brush tool. Furthermore i have managed to change the woman's hair colour using the brush tool also, without making it look unnatural.
